Your first month in Korea: a practical checklist

Residence registration, a bank account, a phone number and a transport card — in the order that actually works.

The first month in Korea is a sequence of small administrative tasks that each depend on the one before it. Done in the right order it takes a fortnight; done in the wrong order it takes the semester.

The order that works

  1. 1Residence registration. Almost everything else asks for it, so it comes first.
  2. 2Phone number. Bank accounts and most services need a local number for verification.
  3. 3Bank account. Bring your registration card, passport and proof of address.
  4. 4Transport card. Cheap, available at any convenience store, and instantly useful.
  5. 5Health insurance. Confirm what your institution enrols you in and what it does not cover.

Settling in

Go to the orientation even if it looks optional — it is where you meet the people who will answer your questions for the next two years. Join one club in the first month, while everyone else is also new. And learn enough Korean to be polite in a shop; it changes how the city feels far more than the vocabulary justifies.

The students who settle fastest are not the ones with the best Korean. They are the ones who asked for help in week one.
