Understanding D-2 Visa Types and Application Routes
Over the past decade, South Korea has emerged as a highly appealing destination for international students.

The D-2 is South Korea's degree-study visa, and it is not one visa but a family of sub-categories. Choosing the wrong one is a correctable mistake, but it is an expensive one — so it is worth ten minutes now.
The sub-categories
- D-2-1
- Associate degree
- D-2-2
- Bachelor's degree
- D-2-3
- Master's degree
- D-2-4
- Doctoral degree
- D-2-5
- Research
- D-2-6
- Exchange student
Your sub-category follows the programme you have been admitted to, not the level you are hoping to reach. An applicant admitted to a bachelor's programme applies under D-2-2 even if the long-term plan is postgraduate study in Korea.
What every D-2 route requires
- A standard admission letter from a recognised Korean institution.
- Verified academic documents covering your full educational history.
- Proof of financial capability — a balance certificate held for the required period, not a recent deposit.
- A valid passport and the application form completed to match it exactly.
- Health and background documentation where the consulate requests it.
How the application runs
- 1
Secure admission
Apply to the programme and receive the standard admission letter. Nothing in the visa process can start without it.
- 2
Assemble the file
Verified academics, financial evidence and passport, all consistent in name and spelling.
- 3
Book the appointment
Consulate availability is the tightest constraint in the calendar. Book as soon as the admission letter arrives.
- 4
Attend and follow up
Bring originals of everything you submitted as copies, and answer questions consistently with what is in your file.
After you arrive
Register your residence within the required window and keep your status current — including if you change programme, institution or address. Part-time work requires explicit permission before you start, not after.
If you are still deciding between a degree programme and a language course first, our guide to the D-4 visa category covers the other route.
